Protecting the Most Vulnerable

Recently, I tabled a bill in the Senate that would amend the bankruptcy process to better protect employees on long-term disability (LTD) by granting them preferred status during bankruptcy proceedings.

In From the Margins to Ensure Prosperity for Canada

In the report entitled: Recession, Recovery and the Future Evolution of the Labour Market, the Chamber cautioned that an aging population and Canada’s low birth rate will exert significant strains on Canada’s labour market in the coming decades. Simply put, going forward we will have too few workers to meet the needs of the Canadian economy and society.

In From the Margins: A Call to Action to End Poverty in Canada

After two years of study and until recently nearly a decade of unprecedented economic growth in Canadian cities – the Senate Sub-Committee on Cites (which I chaired) were hoping to tell Canadians that we are winning the fight against poverty in Canada. Sadly we cannot.

We need to do more for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

Recently, I attended a conference in Vancouver on income security for people with intellectual disabilities. Sadly, what I heard there is consistent with what the Senate Subcommittee on Cities heard during its extensive study on poverty, housing and homelessness.

The downturn, coupled with Kingston's historically low vacancy rate for rental units, has many families looking for a place to live with few options available.
